Tuesday May 22nd, 2012 17:08 A Sloane Companion, vol VIII: Tigers Mauling Dogs

Good morning Sun. Across the world, young men and women graduate higher education bright eyed and bushy tailed, ready for the many challenges they will soon meet. Meanwhile the rest of us are left to stare into the mirror and ask ourselves where the last four years went. A bunch of twenty somethings wondering why they still feel like just yesterday they were the ones dressed head to toe in a cap and gown. Hats were thrown, champagne bottles ceremoniously opened, and offer letters signed. Then suddenly you’re not young anymore. Well new graduates, welcome to the real world of happy hours, nine to fives, and 401ks. Take comfort in the unknown. The rest of the world is still trying to figure it all out as well. While you sit down to apply for your first job, put our latest companion on and take the summer in one song at a time.

Monday May 21st, 2012 12:00 Simian Mobile Disco: Unpatterns

The English duo are not new to the electronic scene. Producing music since 2007, James Ford and Jas Shaw have been consistently churning out material for turn tables all over the world. A sort of ambient, flowing vibe pervades their newest album, Unpatterns. Analogue production is specked with looped vocals eluding to heartache and loss, resulting in a strangely poignant trend throughout. Yet, true to their name, catchy tracks worthy of  late-night dance-offs are blended  in, combining nostalgic struggle with a heartfelt attempt to move on.  Let’s hope they illuminate our local live music establishments sometime soon.

Tuesday May 15th, 2012 18:05 Modern Rivals: Defenestrate You

I am not exactly sure who Modern Rivals would like to throw out a window, but I do know they channeled some serious Vampire Weekend love on “Defenestrate You.” It’s a delightful song nonetheless and the band has a new EP out for free, which you can grab at their bandcamp page. Personally, I loved what this band was doing before and my opinion has not changed a bit with this new release. The more music they produce the better off we all are.
